INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT PREGNANCY

  •  Over the course of the pregnancy, the uterus stretches from the size of a peach to roughly the size of a medium watermelon. That's about 500 times its normal size.

  • When nearing the end of pregnancy, a woman's placenta produces more estrogen in one day than a non-pregnant woman will produce in three years

  • Extra fluid and water retention can cause pregnant women's feet to grow up to one full shoe size.

  •  It is totally possible to be pregnant for an entire year. The longest pregnancy on record was reportedly 375 days long.

  • Chances of a multiple birth increase with tall or overweight mothers.

3. Drink plenty of fluids -- at least eight to 10 glasses a day -- avoiding caffeine and artificial coloring.

Support System for Embryo

CHORION

  • The  extraembryonic mesoderm and trophoblast become chorion.
  • encloses the entire embryo and will extend into uterus wall.
  • function:
  • provide anchorage and increase the surface area for transfer of nutrient, oxygen and excretory products between embryo and the maternal.
  • produce hCG hormone.

AMNION
·        Surronds the entire embryo
·         Contain amniotic cavity, filled with amniotic fluid.
·         Amnion will break before birth.
     Function:
·         Inner protection membrane
·         As a protective cushions that absorbs shocks

YOLK SAC
·         Develop from hypoblast
·         In human, yolk does not contain any yolk.
Function:
·         Start the production of blood cell and germ cell.

ALLANTOIS
·         The outgrowth of the developing digestive tract.
·         Extend from yolk sac.
Function:
·         Involve in early formation of blood vassel.
·         Associate with the development of urinary bladder.

Trimester of Pregnancy

"Pregnancy is a long, 10-month journey,"
 Dr. Draion Burch
An obstetrician and gynecologist at Magee-Womens Hospital at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Human gestation divided into THREE trimester:
•First Trimester (1st)
•Second Trimester (2nd)
•Third Trimester (3rd)
*1 trimester = 3 month

First Trimester

The first trimester is the main period of organogenesis, development of the body organs. All the major structures are present by 8 weeks. The embryo is called a fetus

During its first 2 to 4 weeks, the embryo obtains nutrients directly from the endometrium. Meanwhile, the outer layer of the blastocyst, called the trophoblast, mingles with the endometriumand eventually forms the placenta. Blood from the embryo travels to the placenta through arteries of the umbilical cord and returns via the umbilical vein.
